  1. Some very humble people also admire and honor great things. And some people considered great in some way are in fact mean spirited, selfish, greedy, and pompous. It’s up to us to follow what is truly worthy and to value what is noble.

    • Yes, great people need not be “famous.”

      I wonder if Thackeray had a sense that people of his day had a shared set of values. Worthy and noble are two words not often used today (like virtue).

      I still think there are many worthy and noble people out there if we seek them but they are not what our modern western world seems to value at the moment.
