Oh my, yes. The classics matter! I am not opposed to supplementing the classics with more contemporary works. In fact that might foster really interesting classroom projects and discussions, but the best way to become immersed in a time period is to read both the great literature it produced and often even the not-as-great works that were widely read.
So true! I wish I had more lives to live so I could read more! For whatever reason I have a harder time reading modern fiction than the old stuff (great and not-so-great). I’m a backwards looking person 🙂
