Family criticism per se can be toxic. It’s not always objective, because of the interpersonal dynamics involved

So true. My family always meant well, but, boy, were their perspectives on life strange (as is my own, I guess). Of course there is a difference when family members are thoughtful and trying give advice with love–but it’s a tightrope!

It may be they are the best, simply because they’re not afraid to tell you the truth. On the other hand, there’s nothing that will ruin a good turkey dinner than the truth. 😀
